Description
A multimedia celebration of the iconic Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, and vaunted saint who, in Catholic tradition, appeared to Juan Diego in 1531. A custom commissioned work for a Dolan Geiman collector, this work combines paper collage with woodworking and metal wall sculpture to create a devotional homage to this important religious figure. In contemplative prayer, Mary stands on a hillside in the storied mass of roses, while heavenly sunrise and sunset tones throw light from behind. Dressed in an iridescent, star-spangled tilma, a chorus of vibrant birds in flight encircle her face. Dolan has borrowed from a medieval tradition of adding a circular glow behind her head, indicating sanctity. This piece offers a unique 3D element, as well, as Mary and the birds are collaged onto individual pieces of wood, each one standing out from the background with textural depth. Contemporary religious devotional paper collage art.
