Rendered in vintage paper, this patchwork of narrative moments in America’s history offers the experience of a unique tale unfolding along an unknown path with each new viewing. Start at any point and travel north to south, east to west, and watch the story unfurl itself towards a new horizon, an endlessly rich tapestry of fact and lore and memory. Each detail in this custom commissioned work was selected by the client to represent core moments in the USA’s formation and foundation, bits of culture and nature crossing over, the peoples and ideas of this great land forging overlapping narratives within one all-encompassing storybook. A compilation of some of Dolan’s signature techniques, this mixed media work includes paper collage, charcoal, and hand sketching. Look closely to find song lyrics, snippets of original poetry evoking the spirit of the West, cultural touchstones, textile design, and scrap maps and sheet music that guide eyes and ears back upon centuries past and towards a shared future.
